Or is it an region free import NTSC?
It was never technically in print. MGM cancelled the DVD release about a week or so before the street date, but by then they had already pressed the discs and some retailers had them. I got mine from FYE, who had it out a few days before the street date. So that first pressing did make its way out there, but it was never supposed to.
I seem to recall that remaindered copies of the MGM DVD also managed to show up at Big Lots, a couple years after the fact, but those would have long since dried up. It's my understanding that MGM still owns the film, worldwide, but won't re-release it or make it available for licensing to any of their partner labels. This film attracts bad publicity like flies to shit, so whatever the case may be, there isn't going to be any incentive for MGM to do anything with it, ever again.
It appears there are NTSC-compatible bootlegs currently being sold through Amazon. I can't vouch for their quality, but they sell at a much more reasonable price than second-hand copies of the MGM DVDs. Current copyright law is such that we'll all be dead long before it can fall into the public domain, so it's unlikely that there will be any legal alternatives to the second-hand copies in the foreseeable future.
I have the original first pressing MGM DVD that I bought in 2003 or 2004 at Newbury Comics. I think most of the ones out there these days are bootlegs... they look virtually like the original MGM DVD, but are still fakes.
Vinegar Syndrome have stated that they would release it, but I doubt MGM/Amazon want anything to do with it anymore.
I had a legit copy but quit working. I seen deep discount has it for $10
It's a bootleg, but probably a direct rip from the MGM R1 DVD.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Deep Discount generally makes an effort to only carry imports that are region A / 1 friendly, or at least they do with blu-rays anyway. So your issue would be PAL / NTSC with DVDs. The listing does say NTSC.
Thanks I think I'll try and get it soon i read most customer reviews saying its an Australia import but is a DVD of the MGM disc copied.
Got it yesterday at my record store and it basically is the oop MGM disc the only thing removed is the mgm logos on the cover art and spine. Very happy I have this horror movie in my collection now.
